Meet Amy Suto: Your Memoir Ghostwriter

Are you looking to hire a memoir writer to help you tell your story?

I help entrepreneurs, accomplished individuals, and families capture their life stories in a compelling way in the formats of memoirs, business books, and hybrid genres that stem from the life experiences you’ve had.

Here are the elements you need to consider when hiring a top-tier ghostwriter for your memoir or autobiography:

Understand the importance of professional writing credentials. When hiring a memoir ghostwriter, you’re looking for someone like myself who has had books published with the major publishing houses (Simon & Schuster, Penguin Random House, HarperCollins, Macmillan, and Hachette) and who has top-tier writing credentials (I graduated from USC’s writing program that is more competitive than Harvard Law.) Professional writing experience is also important — that’s why I spent the first few years of my career writing for TV shows in Hollywood and also being hired to write for publications like The Los Angeles Times.

Experience and awareness of both the traditional and the self-publishing spaces. A lot of my memoir ghostwriting clients find success from the self-publishing models — especially entrepreneurs who want an end-to-end book ghostwriting solution that not only includes a high-end book manuscript but also compelling book funnels and a book marketing team behind them. I work one-on-one with you for the book writing process, but once it’s time for us to think about the publishing outcomes of your book, I have a book marketing and design team I can loop in to help you grow your audience and drive revenue to your business with your book.

High-end book ghostwriters are an investment. If you’re looking to work with someone on my level, expect to invest anywhere from $60,000-$120,000 depending on the complexity of your book project and if you’d like me to fly out and meet you in person for the interview portion of the book writing process.

Be sure to work with a book ghostwriter who is also a published author. I’ve written and published two books: a nonfiction “how-to” book with personal stories called Six-Figure Freelance Writer: A Holistic Guide on Finding Freedom in Freelancing, and the first book in my fiction detective series, The Nomad Detective: Volume I. Real authors understand how to publish profitable books that their audiences love, and those ghostwriters will be able to apply those skills to your book as well.

Understand how you want to work with your book ghostwriter. I don’t mind traveling to visit my clients in person (and I’m not afraid of a long-haul flight!) but I do include increased fees to cover my travel and the time spent in transit. I book my own travel for these types of jobs, and for in-person interviews I recommend somewhere between 3-10 days to kick off a project if you’d like to do so in person. Mostly, however, I work with my clients via Zoom and phone calls. I’m adaptable based on what you’re most comfortable with, and during the writing process itself, I prefer to switch to asynchronous work (emails and voice memos instead of calls) to help me better focus on the writing process.

Jeanne testimonial

“Amy was the gift my book needed! I had written a memoir but it lacked a voice and emotion. Amy quickly found my voice, found my sub themes and rewrote my memoir. She brought me to tears when I read her rewrite outline as it was exactly what I had wanted and needed for my story. Amy works quickly, meets every deadline she sets and was so tapped into my vision and my story. The investment was worth every penny! She is incredibly talented and a pleasure to work with.”

My Memoir Ghostwriting Process

FREE DISCOVERY CALL

Ready to start your story? Send me a message and let's chat. On your complimentary discovery call, you can share the details about your story with me and what you’re looking for.

PROJECT COMMENCEMENT

After our initial call, I'll send over my standard contract and an invoice so we can begin.

OUTLINING & THE ALCHEMY OF YOUR STORY

I'll begin with a big-picture outline where I'll work with you on capturing your life story on Zoom calls or phone calls and translating it onto the page in the most elevated form possible. From there, I'll get your feedback and then create a detailed chapter outline that will serve as the roadmap for the book.

GENERATING THE FIRST DRAFT

After your chapter outline is created, we'll switch to asynchronous work and I'll send you a list of questions each week as well as a new Google Docs file with the updated draft. You can send voice memos or screenshare videos answering my questions and/or giving notes on the draft as it evolves. I work with a writer's assistant who helps me with fact-checking, proofreading, and other as-needed editorial tasks so that I can capture every facet of your life on the page. This part of the process can take anywhere from 2-3 months depending on how quickly you're able to get back to my questions.

TAILORING, REWRITING, AND THE FINAL FINE-TUNE

After we've generated the clay of the first draft, it's time to mold your story into perfection! Each memoir has a unique revision process, and I'll walk through those steps with you to tailor your draft, get notes from beta readers, and complete a polished final draft for you to take to the next step.

PUBLISHING NEXT STEPS

Once you’re ready to discuss next steps, I’ll create a bespoke package for you. I work with a book design and book marketing team to give your book the best shot at success.

FAQ

Do you recommend traditional publishing or self-publishing?

It depends: traditional publishing can validate your book, but it can also take several years to publish the book through big publishers. Working with me to self-publish your books means that you don’t have to lift a finger, but you can see your book in readers’ hands within a few months and you’ll receive a larger percentage of royalties.

How much does it cost to hire you as a memoir ghostwriter for my book?

It depends: expect to spend anywhere from $60,000-$120,000 for a book. Pricing depends on whether or not there is an in-person interview component, the length and complexity of your book, and other factors.

How long does the writing process take?

It depends on your availability to review questions and drafts, but generally book projects take me anywhere from 3-6 months from first outline to final draft.

  • "If you are lucky enough to get a chance to work with Amy, grab it! She is a pleasure to work with, and quickly steered me in the right direction. The only way it could have been better is if I had found her a year earlier! Her communication is fantastic, she is reachable and makes herself available. She delivered everything ahead of schedule. Her insights have been invaluable. The best way to sum it up is that when I reviewed her details, I decided to pay 4 times what I had been planning to pay, and it was a very wise decision!"

She is excellent with her communication, thorough research and she really knows how to nail exactly what you're looking for. My only advice is to provide her with as much detail as you possibly can and it'll produce the best results. I can tell that Amy prides herself on being the best in the business even if she would prefer to humble herself and say she's only ONE of the best. But no, She IS the best!”

  • "I couldn't be any happier with Amy's work on my project. She is an amazing writer. She followed my brand messaging guide to a "T" and she is extremely efficient with her time. She has excellent intuition and will find just the right words to communicate your message to your target audience."
