Since I arrived in Asia in March, I've been really choosey about how I spend my "free" time. I've been basically living in coffeeshops, writing my short story anthology, going on hikes, and waking up early to squeeze in yoga classes.⁠ ⁠ I've still found time for fun, but when I'm deep in a writing project I find that "discipline" is the word I think about the most. ⁠ ⁠ How can I protect my focus? How can I still enjoy a week but show up on the page in my best form? What is my art asking of me? ⁠ ⁠ Back when I was working my way up the ladder in Hollywood, I used to wake up at 5am and go to a coffeeshop to write. Arrived in Kyoto on Friday and spent the last few days exploring and searching for this month’s writing spot ☕️ I’ll be honest: maybe it’s the area we’re staying in, but so far I think the cafe culture and cute streets of Seoul have Tokyo and Kyoto beat. But Japan also has more vegetarian options and some great nature, so I’m excited to dive in deeper to learn more about this country over the next month, and do some samurai training at a dojo this week. 🇯🇵 #digitalnomad #travel #coffee #nomad

The Korean government organizes tours to the DMZ to educate tourists on the history of the Korean War… and to sell soybean chocolate 🍫 The DMZ, or the demilitarized zone that separates North and South Korea, apparently has amazing soil — which means a lot of farmers live here and cultivate crops like soybean and ginseng. As part of our tour, we ate lunch at the cafeteria in the reunification village, which was some of the best food I’ve had in South Korea. I had a bimibap bowl made with organic veggies grown locally — and amazing rice. The souvenir most worth getting is the soybean chocolates: they’re crunchy soybeans coated in white chocolate that are unlike anything I’ve tried. The tour itself was a dichotomy of weird whimsy and tragic history: Korea has been through a lot, and a lot of families remain separated. But the DMZ itself is oddly upbeat and colorful. A short video we watched filled with uplifting music and clips of local nature — a few minutes away from the live minefield that holds over 2 million mines.
