The Best Romantasy Books on Kindle Unlimited

In 2024, I became obsessed with the romantasy genre and positively inhaled over 80 books in the genre. Thanks to Kindle Unlimited, I didn’t have to spend a small fortune on books — and the $10/month membership was more than worth it!

If you’ve recently finished Onyx Storm and need your next romantasy fix beyond the Fourth Wing series, I’ve got your back.

Here’s my complete list (updated regularly!) of GREAT romantasy books that are on Kindle Unlimited, with spice level rankings and my overall thoughts on them — no spoilers!

Quicksilver by Callie Hart

This book is about… When Saeris Fane falls into the world of the fae, she’ll do anything to help her people back home. That includes working with an irritable fae warrior to help craft weapons made of quicksilver — a type of material that can drive those who wield it mad — for an upcoming war.

Subgenre: medieval romantasy.

Spice level: 🌶️🌶️🌶️ 3/5. This book was quite spicy and some of the things that came out of Kingfisher’s mouth ~ absolutely ~ made me blush.

My rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4/5 stars. This was one of my top reads of 2024 — what a fun romp. Great banter, fun action scenes, and a fast-paced plot. Read my full review here!

The Ash Trials by Amy Suto (The Septerra Series)

I’m including my own book in this list as well! It officially comes out February 14th, 2025. Early readers have really dug the book, but I can’t wait to hear what you think.

This book is about… In the prison of Ashguard, Saffron Vale awakens in a ruined wedding dress with no memory of who she is. As the only powerless human competing against murderous shifters and spellcasters, she must survive the six otherworldly Ash Trials that turn villains into legends — all while choosing between a royal commander who claims to be her childhood friend and an assassin who hints that she may be the most dangerous competitor of them all.

Subgenre: medieval romantasy/deadly trials.

Spice level: 🌶️🌶️🌶️ 3/5. I’ve included a good amount of spice in this book — can’t wait to hear what you think of it!

What I hope you’ll love about it: I’ve poured everything I love about the romantasy genre with this book! Deadly trials, a strong FMC, swords and sorcery, yearning, slow-ish burn, “who hurt you?”, “touch her and die!” — all that good stuff. I’ve also chosen a love triangle trope, which I haven’t read recently in romantasy and I think it’s time for it to make more of a comeback — with a twist.

Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros (The Empyrean Series)

This book is about… Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail chooses to enter Basigath war college and become a dragon rider — not the scribe she thought she would be. She must overcome the limitations of her “fragile” body in order to survive and claim her destiny.

Subgenre: medieval dragon romantasy.

Spice level: 🌶️🌶️🌶️ 3/5. This book has some spice, and I’d say it’s on par with Quicksilver.

My rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4/5 stars. While I really enjoyed Fourth Wing, the rest of the series is pretty uneven. I’d still recommend it, though — there are a lot of fun action/adventure scenes in these books that are well-drawn and fun even if the plotting is messy.

The first two books of this series (Fourth Wing and Iron Flame) are available on Kindle Unlimited, but Onyx Storm (which just recently came out as of this post) is only available for purchase as an FYI.

Phantasma by Kaylie Smith (Wicked Games)

This book is about… When Ophelia’s sister disappears, she must enter a set of deadly trials that take place in a magical New Orleans mansion that’s said to be run by the devil himself. If she wins? She’ll be granted a single wish.

Subgenre: modern dark romantasy/deadly trials.

Spice level: 🌶️🌶️🌶️ 3/5. Lots of spice in this one.

My rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4/5 stars. This book was ~ almost ~ a five-star read for me. The New Orleans setting and the exploration of necromancy and demons gave it a cool gothic horror twist to the story. I devoured this book in two days, and it had some good twists. However, I will say that the ending fizzled for me, and it felt a bit rushed. But I still highly recommend this one to you — I think you’ll really enjoy it.

Spark of the Everflame by Penn Cole (The Kindred’s Curse Saga)

The book is about… Healer Diem Bellator lives in a mortal world colonized by cruel, magical offspring called the Descended. This book kicks off a slow burn romance between Diem and the handsome yet enigmatic heir to the throne.

Subgenre: medieval romantasy.

Spice level: 🌶️🌶️ 2/5. This series has a very slow burn romance with a bit of spice in the later books.

My rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ 3/5 stars. I thought this was a very solid series, but it felt like it began to deflate in a pretty big way by the time book 3 rolled around. It’s also an unfinished series and from what I read online it looks like book #4 is delayed, so start reading at your own risk. However, I do think the slow burn romance is pretty good in the first 1-2 books, so if you are in need of a good enemies-to-lovers series, this has some good moments in it.

City of Gods and Monsters by Kayla Edwards (House of Devils Series)

The book is about… Loren Calla is a human struggling to stay alive in a city of werewolves, vampires, and other supernatural creatures. But when she crosses paths with the head of the House of Devils himself, she’s taken into the city of Angelthene’s dark underbelly to search for the truth and save those she loves.

Subgenre: modern/urban romantasy.

Spice level: 🌶️🌶️🌶️ 3/5. Spicy, especially in later books.

My rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ 3/5 stars. I had a really fun time reading this series by Kayla Edwards, and I’m looking forward to the next installment. I feel like this book pulls off what Crescent City did badly — it brings interesting, real stakes to an urban city where monsters, witches, and other magic wielders are dealing with different threats. However, I will say that this series can be a bit repetitive and half-baked, and the ending to books 2 and 3 are nearly identical. I think this remedied by the fact that the male main character Darien Cassel is written really well, even if the rest of the characters leave something to be desired. You’ll probably enjoy this one if you don’t mind a few plot holes and big chunks of exposition.
